balling on a budget

First Impressions: New l/e Products from Black Radiance

Let's preface this by stating that Black Radiance is not a black-owned company. Now that that is out of the way, let's get into these limited edition goodies!

Y'all know that I always talk about affordable makeup, and everything inbetween, so I couldn't help but indulge in these new products while on my makeup no-buy.  Clearly my will power wasn't that strong; so I now have a contour palette, three matte lip creams and a baked bronzer, added to my makeup collection.

Artisan Color Baked Bronzer in Rose Gold $5

While this item is called a baked bronzer it definitely isn't, based on it's light color I would refer to this as a baked highlighter. This highlighter literally looks so amazing on the skin. It gives this wet, "Oh wow, her skin is so nice. I wish mine looked like that!" type of look and I LOVE it! I've used it almost every time I've done my makeup since purchasing.

Perfect Tone Matte Lip Cream in Matte Muse $4

Love the color. Despise the formulation. It's very watery, settles into the lines on your lips and it transfers.

Perfect Tone Matte Lip Cream in Matte About You $4

My opinion for Matte About You is the same as Matte Muse above.

Perfect Tone Matte Lip Cream in Melanin Princess $4

melanin princess
Out of the three metallic matte lip creams I've purchased this one is my favorite. There's a difference in the formulation because this lip cream isn't watery when applying. The color is also one of my favorites for lip products so I couldn't go wrong there. The lasting power is about on par with the others. If you eat/drink you will notice patches of color missing. This is color is very similar to the NYX Cosmic Metal in Asteroid Aura (one of my FAVES!).

The execution of these products should have been better considering they've released two collections of the metallic lip creams.
Side note: the color Melanin Princess is not pictured below because I took this picture after I had taken it from the display. The good thing is that you can see the other limited edition colors from their 'Black Girl Magic' collection. I own the red lipgloss to the bottom left, and it's definitely something you should pick up.

True Complexion Blushing Bronze Palette in Dark to Deep$8

I was SO excited to try out this palette that I put everything else I had considered purchasing back on the shelf. Would I regret it? No. But I don't like this palette as much as I would have expected. The contour color is too close to my skintone; which makes me wonder how many in the 'dark to deep' category could actually contour with this? The blush is pretty but not the shade of pink I love. And the highlighter is too glittery, if you put too much of it on you'll look crazy. Every person has their preference so this may be a hit for you or others who previously own their cream/powder contour palettes. I used this palette on my face for the first day of classes, and I must say it looked dang good!

If you've tried these items what are your thoughts, did you love it or did you reconsider your purchases?

Gems from the Drugstore

drugstore gems

L.A. Colors Contour Sticks | $1

With the super hot summer sun coming out daily, my go-to makeup has been concealer to cover dark marks, face powder and a lot of highlighter/bronzer to create an easy going bronzed goddess look. Keys to this look are the L.A. Colors contour stick in Medium – to conceal, bronzer – to highlight cheekbones, and highlighter – in my inner-corner and brow bone. They apply so smoothly and work well with my beauty blender AND brushes which is a bonus.

Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herb and Rose Water | $7

I use this after I do a face mask, before AND after I apply my makeup, after moisturizing and basically whenever I feel like it. You’ll feel super luxurious on a budget, and there is nothing wrong with that!

Wet n Wild Megalast Lipsticks | $2

If you haven’t tried at least one of these lipsticks I am truly concerned. The megalast lipsticks from Wet n Wild are the undisputed GOAT in the drugstore! There is a wide range of colors and they also make limited edition ones each season that usually end up being my absolute favorites. The only thing I dislike about these lipsticks are the packaging… it is terrible! I have had to replace so many of these lipsticks because the lid came off in my purse or makeup case and it’s over for the lipstick.

Shine Control Primer | Black Radiance | $6

While this primer has become quite popular on YouTube, I still consider it to be a hidden gem in the drugstore along with the other Black Radiance primers.

XXXL Shine Lipgloss | Essence | $2.50

I love these because they are so shiny and perfect, especially when I just want to wear something simple. One of my favorite things about them is that I can usually get them buy one get one half off at Ulta. A DEAL!

Color Icon Kohl Lip & Eye Pencils | Wet n Wild | $1

Bomb, bomb, bomb! I’ve been using Simma Brown Now! and Pretty in Mink for a while and I haven’t ran out yet. I alternate using the dark brown shades for my eyebrows depending on whichever one is sharper because you have to manually sharpen them yourself LOL. For a dollar though, I can’t complain! I also have some of the bold blue eyeliners and mauve lipliners. I love them all – purchase some, k?

Brilliant Effects Lipgloss | Black Radiance | $4

I talk about these like all the time. You can read about it here, here AND here!

I’m sure I left a few items out so I will my link previous posts featuring my other favorite drugstore items below. I hope you enjoy!

First Impression | NEW Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder

I’m sure many of you are familiar with Maybelline’s Fit Me collection, it’s one of the best collections that you can find in the drugstore for under $10. One of the reasons why this line is so popular is because you’re getting great quality makeup that comes in a wide range of colors, and it’s also very affordable. Recently, the Fit Me foundation line was extended by adding 18 new shades of foundation which means the line now has 32 shades. They range from the lightest shade Porcelain 102 to Java 375 the darkest shade. The Fit Me line currently consists of the Dewy/Matte + Poreless foundations, concealer, pressed powder, blush and shine free foundation stick. The newest addition to that line is the Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder!

After watching a YouTube video reviewing the loose powder, I went directly to the Maybelline section of my local Walmart to hunt down the newest item. The loose setting power comes in eight different shades starting at Fair and ending at Dark. I purchased the color Deep (the second darkest) for only $5.94! The Fit Me Loose Finishing powder is described as a mineral-based formula that will help control shine and smooth skins texture with a hint of color. You can currently find this in-stores and online at Walmart, Ulta and Maybelline’s website.

The products I used when testing this out were:

Maybelline Baby Skin Primer

Maybelline Matte + Poreless foundation in Coconut 355

Ruby Kisses Pure Mineral concealer in Golden Honey mixed with the Marc Jacobs Coconut Dew Drops Highligther

& Wet n Wild Megaglo highlighting powder in Lilac to Reality

After applying the loose finishing powder to my right (left on picture) under eye area

After applying the loose finishing powder to my full face in different lighting

Final thoughts: I definitely loved the finished product after applying this finishing powder to my full face. It feels very light on, and kept my face from getting oily which I occasionally experience when using the Fit Me Matte + Poreless foundation.  I also liked the fact that the powder didn’t alter the color of my already applied makeup. I applied my makeup at 5:30 and didn’t take it off until 12, after the NBA Finals Game 3 (GO CAVS!). During those hours I never needed a retouch and that is what really won me over.

I won’t recommend this product because I would like to try it with a different combination of items before I give it my stamp of approval but I’m not saying that you shouldn’t buy it either (like that helps LOL). If you do try it, let me know what you used it with and your thoughts!

Save Money While You #Slay pt. II

Do you love discovering new things and saving money on some of your favorite brands? If so this post is for you. Below there are three super cool subscription services and a resource for college students who enjoy online shopping. Part one of my Save Money While You #Slay series is here!

FullSizeRender

  • Influenster
    • Influenster is a service that sends you products free for reviewing. The level of items that you receive are based on your social media influence after connecting your SM accounts with Influenster. The items you review will vary depending on your interests like beauty, fashion, technology, traveling etc. Because of Influenster I’ve been able to try items from Bite Beauty, Marc Jacobs, Covergirl, Ralph Lauren and many other popular brands. If you like to try new things and don’t mind doing tasks like reviewing and sharing on social media then sign on up today!
  • Unidays
    • If you’re a college student who loves to online shop then you must sign up for Unidays! Unidays is a website that gives you access to student discounts from many popular brands such as Boohoo, missguided, Levi’s, Apple, Asos, and MORE. You must have a current student email to use these great deals. You are also required to verify your student status but it’s worth it if you love these brands.
  • Sample Source
    • Sample Source is another service that sends you products free to “try before you buy”. For this service you have to fill out your profile to give them more information about yourself and the items you’re interested in. They will send you an email whenever there are samples available that fit your profile. You then get the option to choose which items will fill your box. It’s also imporatnt to keep your profile up to date so you can try more things.
  • PINCHme
    • PINCHme is another service where you can get products free for reviewing purposes. For this service you need to take a shopper survey so they can match you with the best samples. Out of the three services mentioned this one is my least favorite because as long as I’ve been using this service I haven’t been a match for many of the sample dates which are once a Tuesday every month. I will say that I have been able to get free magazine subscriptions so I guess it’s okay. You also have to update your profile quite frequently.
    • Samples I’ve received: Greenies Pill Pockets for my dog Roscoe, a Scotch-Brite Scrubbing dish cloth (that I loved), a dog food coupon, a grey reducing shampoo for men (for my dad) and Shout Color catcher dye trapping sheets.

That’s all for part two of the Save While You #Slay series. Whenever I find more deals/services I will be sure to create a third part. I hope this series is useful for those who don’t want to break the bank with each purchase/new thing they try.
