Gems from the Drugstore

drugstore gems

L.A. Colors Contour Sticks | $1

With the super hot summer sun coming out daily, my go-to makeup has been concealer to cover dark marks, face powder and a lot of highlighter/bronzer to create an easy going bronzed goddess look. Keys to this look are the L.A. Colors contour stick in Medium – to conceal, bronzer – to highlight cheekbones, and highlighter – in my inner-corner and brow bone. They apply so smoothly and work well with my beauty blender AND brushes which is a bonus.

Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herb and Rose Water | $7

I use this after I do a face mask, before AND after I apply my makeup, after moisturizing and basically whenever I feel like it. You’ll feel super luxurious on a budget, and there is nothing wrong with that!

Wet n Wild Megalast Lipsticks | $2

If you haven’t tried at least one of these lipsticks I am truly concerned. The megalast lipsticks from Wet n Wild are the undisputed GOAT in the drugstore! There is a wide range of colors and they also make limited edition ones each season that usually end up being my absolute favorites. The only thing I dislike about these lipsticks are the packaging… it is terrible! I have had to replace so many of these lipsticks because the lid came off in my purse or makeup case and it’s over for the lipstick.

Shine Control Primer | Black Radiance | $6

While this primer has become quite popular on YouTube, I still consider it to be a hidden gem in the drugstore along with the other Black Radiance primers.

XXXL Shine Lipgloss | Essence | $2.50

I love these because they are so shiny and perfect, especially when I just want to wear something simple. One of my favorite things about them is that I can usually get them buy one get one half off at Ulta. A DEAL!

Color Icon Kohl Lip & Eye Pencils | Wet n Wild | $1

Bomb, bomb, bomb! I’ve been using Simma Brown Now! and Pretty in Mink for a while and I haven’t ran out yet. I alternate using the dark brown shades for my eyebrows depending on whichever one is sharper because you have to manually sharpen them yourself LOL. For a dollar though, I can’t complain! I also have some of the bold blue eyeliners and mauve lipliners. I love them all – purchase some, k?

Brilliant Effects Lipgloss | Black Radiance | $4

I talk about these like all the time. You can read about it here, here AND here!

I’m sure I left a few items out so I will my link previous posts featuring my other favorite drugstore items below. I hope you enjoy!

First Impression | NEW Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder

I’m sure many of you are familiar with Maybelline’s Fit Me collection, it’s one of the best collections that you can find in the drugstore for under $10. One of the reasons why this line is so popular is because you’re getting great quality makeup that comes in a wide range of colors, and it’s also very affordable. Recently, the Fit Me foundation line was extended by adding 18 new shades of foundation which means the line now has 32 shades. They range from the lightest shade Porcelain 102 to Java 375 the darkest shade. The Fit Me line currently consists of the Dewy/Matte + Poreless foundations, concealer, pressed powder, blush and shine free foundation stick. The newest addition to that line is the Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder!

After watching a YouTube video reviewing the loose powder, I went directly to the Maybelline section of my local Walmart to hunt down the newest item. The loose setting power comes in eight different shades starting at Fair and ending at Dark. I purchased the color Deep (the second darkest) for only $5.94! The Fit Me Loose Finishing powder is described as a mineral-based formula that will help control shine and smooth skins texture with a hint of color. You can currently find this in-stores and online at Walmart, Ulta and Maybelline’s website.

The products I used when testing this out were:

Maybelline Baby Skin Primer

Maybelline Matte + Poreless foundation in Coconut 355

Ruby Kisses Pure Mineral concealer in Golden Honey mixed with the Marc Jacobs Coconut Dew Drops Highligther

& Wet n Wild Megaglo highlighting powder in Lilac to Reality

After applying the loose finishing powder to my right (left on picture) under eye area

After applying the loose finishing powder to my full face in different lighting

Final thoughts: I definitely loved the finished product after applying this finishing powder to my full face. It feels very light on, and kept my face from getting oily which I occasionally experience when using the Fit Me Matte + Poreless foundation.  I also liked the fact that the powder didn’t alter the color of my already applied makeup. I applied my makeup at 5:30 and didn’t take it off until 12, after the NBA Finals Game 3 (GO CAVS!). During those hours I never needed a retouch and that is what really won me over.

I won’t recommend this product because I would like to try it with a different combination of items before I give it my stamp of approval but I’m not saying that you shouldn’t buy it either (like that helps LOL). If you do try it, let me know what you used it with and your thoughts!

Save Money While You #Slay pt. II

Do you love discovering new things and saving money on some of your favorite brands? If so this post is for you. Below there are three super cool subscription services and a resource for college students who enjoy online shopping. Part one of my Save Money While You #Slay series is here!

FullSizeRender

  • Influenster
    • Influenster is a service that sends you products free for reviewing. The level of items that you receive are based on your social media influence after connecting your SM accounts with Influenster. The items you review will vary depending on your interests like beauty, fashion, technology, traveling etc. Because of Influenster I’ve been able to try items from Bite Beauty, Marc Jacobs, Covergirl, Ralph Lauren and many other popular brands. If you like to try new things and don’t mind doing tasks like reviewing and sharing on social media then sign on up today!
  • Unidays
    • If you’re a college student who loves to online shop then you must sign up for Unidays! Unidays is a website that gives you access to student discounts from many popular brands such as Boohoo, missguided, Levi’s, Apple, Asos, and MORE. You must have a current student email to use these great deals. You are also required to verify your student status but it’s worth it if you love these brands.
  • Sample Source
    • Sample Source is another service that sends you products free to “try before you buy”. For this service you have to fill out your profile to give them more information about yourself and the items you’re interested in. They will send you an email whenever there are samples available that fit your profile. You then get the option to choose which items will fill your box. It’s also imporatnt to keep your profile up to date so you can try more things.
  • PINCHme
    • PINCHme is another service where you can get products free for reviewing purposes. For this service you need to take a shopper survey so they can match you with the best samples. Out of the three services mentioned this one is my least favorite because as long as I’ve been using this service I haven’t been a match for many of the sample dates which are once a Tuesday every month. I will say that I have been able to get free magazine subscriptions so I guess it’s okay. You also have to update your profile quite frequently.
    • Samples I’ve received: Greenies Pill Pockets for my dog Roscoe, a Scotch-Brite Scrubbing dish cloth (that I loved), a dog food coupon, a grey reducing shampoo for men (for my dad) and Shout Color catcher dye trapping sheets.

That’s all for part two of the Save While You #Slay series. Whenever I find more deals/services I will be sure to create a third part. I hope this series is useful for those who don’t want to break the bank with each purchase/new thing they try.

My Beauty Inspiration for 2017

Picture it: The year is 2017 and this is the most flawless beat you’ve ever seen. The skin is dewy, glowing, and the golden highlights look amazing. The lips are coated in a nude/brown lip gloss, that has you wondering which brand it came from. It’s simply A LOOK! A look that I am currently obsessed with. I’ve purchased radiant glow primers, consistently drank a lot of water and I have practiced this look a few times because I am prepared to glow like the goddess I truly am in the year of 2017.

I got the inspiration for this look from these lovely ladies posted below. The source for each picture can be found here along with more makeup inspiration for 2017. If you’re interested in following me on Pinterest you can find me at XOXOSelenaN!

I just want to know if we’re slaying for 2017 or NAH?

Save Money While You #Slay

There’s nothing better than finding a good deal while you’re out and about. That feeling is even better when you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get the deal. I am a huge advocate for the sale and clearance section because it hasn’t let me down, yet. Because I love to spend and save money, I thought I would share a few tips on keeping more money in your wallet!

  • Sign up for sales newsletters and text messages
    • You’ll be one of the first to know about upcoming promotions and will also recieve coupons directly to your phone.
  • Use discount codes
    • Discount codes while shopping online are a God send. You can get free shipping, dollars off, cashback AND free items with a purchase. Utilize websites like eBates, RetailMeNot and Krazycouponlady to practice the art of saving money. You can download the apps and use them in-store as well!
  • Find a good dupe
    •  For makeup you can follow @dupethat and @allintheblush on Instagram for dupes on miscellaneous makeup items.
    • For designer fashion dupes you can look at Real vs.Steal on InTheirCloset or search for designer inspired items (Not a knockoff with the designer name but a similar style from another brand!).
  • Save for big ticket items
    • Saving seems like such a tedious task but it is so worth it in the end. Imagine holding that designer purse in your hands after months of saving, it feels like sweet victory!
  • Check the prices before you buy!
    • More often then not you can find the same item at a lower price from another retailer. This may seem like a lot of work but you can do this research from your phone or computer before you leave the house!
    • If you aren’t able to go to another retailer some places will do a price match and let you get the lower price. It doesn’t hurt to confirm before you try.

I hope that these money saving tips come in handy on your next shopping trip. Be like Ilana from Broad City and get those deals, deals, deals!

Glow girl, glow!

There’s something about bronzers and highlighters that will have you hooked after the first use. Maybe it’s the smile on your face when you see that highlight for the first time or because of the many compliments you’ll receive while out and about.

So I thought it would be a good idea to share some of my favorites so we can all “glo up” this summer!

Capture

Wet ‘n’ Wild Megaglo Highlighting Powder in the shade Crown of My Canopy – $3.99

Wet ‘n’ Wild Shimmering Palette in Rose Champagne Glow – $5.99

Even though WNW no longer sells the Fergie collection they do sell this highlighter under another name. The new name for this highlighter is I’ll Have A Cosmo and it can be found in stores and online. Check it out and get your life!

Wet ‘n’ Wild Coloricon Blush in Apri-Cot in the Middle – $2.99

This blush looks so gorgeous in the packaging but comes out differently on the skin which isn’t exactly a bad thing. Instead of a peachy blush it looks more like a shimmery highlighter that you can wear alone or on top of a more pigmented blush.

ELF Illuminating Palette – $6

You can see swatches and read a review here

Makeup Revolution Vivid Baked Bronzer in the shade Rock On World – $6

Can your skin ever look too bronzed? Maybe, sometimes, but this is not one of those times. I’m pretty sure I’ve used this every time I’ve done my makeup since I purchased it. Just add a little all over the face then set with your finishing spray and you’ll be on your way out the door.

Makeup Revolution Vivid Baked Highlighter in the shade Golden Lights – $6

NYX Born To Glow Liquid Illuminator in Pure Gold – $7.49

My favorite use for this this illuminator is to mix it with my moisturizer or foundation to add a little extra glow. It’s perfect for those lazy days when you aren’t feeling a full face but still want to look good. Just add a few drops, mix, and Voila!

Bomb Products from Black Radiance

Black Radiance has some of my favorite makeup items, ever, and it was only right that I share them with you all. Their products are super affordable, great quality and they cater to women of color!

Perfect Tone Matte Lip Color – $1.99

I already owned quite a few of their perfect tone lipsticks so I knew I had to try the matte version and I was not let down. Their lipstick in the shade Red Carpet will look amazing on everyone so if you’re in the market for a new red lipstick you should pick this up!

Perfect Tone Lip Color  – $1.99

Another one. These lipsticks are highly underrated and deserve the praise for being this good at only two dollars.

True Complexion Refining Skin Primer – $5.99

Perfect Tone Lip Gloss – $2.99

Top off your favorite lip color with these or rock them alone you’ll look great either way!

True Complexion Soft Focus Finishing Powder  – $6.99

I usually use this to set my face or I’ll wear this with a little concealer when I’m not committed to a full face. The packaging is a little big so that can be a problem if you’re looking to bring it in your purse.

Illusions Lip Gloss – $2.99

True Complexion BB Cream – $5.99

I enjoy trying new things so I may not repurchase an item once it’s finished but I’m currently on my second BB cream. If you see this, buy it!

You can find these items at your local drugstore (in-store and online) and here on Black Radiance’s website!

Juvia’s Place – The Nubian 2 Palette

One day while perusing my twitter timeline I came across the company Juvias place and their Nubian palette. After seeing several swatches and watching reviews I immediately went to their website with purchasing the Nubian palette in mind. For whatever reason I then decided to wait only for them to release the Nubian 2. Beautiful isn’t it?

The Nubian 2 is twice the size of the original Nubian which also makes this palette the most expensive out of the two. This palette comes with 4 matte eye shadows and 8 shimmers (that look so amazing!). The pigmentation of these eye shadows is out of this world and I’m afraid to say that the Nubian 2 has replaced my beloved Chocolate Bar palette by Too Faced!

You can find the Nubian here and the Nubian 2 here. Enjoy!
